Many of CheckINN Direct’s 10,000 hotel locations offer the convenience of breakfast onsite (members can check the amenity list for the network hotels that do when you log in to your CheckINN Direct account.)
But if you’re a workforce traveler on a long road trip or extended stay in one area, there may be times when you want to start the day with breakfast fare that’s a little different.
So, how do you discover the hidden gems that the locals know about? Here’s a tip: USA Today offers 25 breakfast “finds” in major metropolitan areas across the country courtesy of Zagat, a survey company that provides consumer-based information on where to eat, drink and stay.
Zagat’s recommendations on these local breakfast spots are even mapped, complete with names and phone numbers.
What’s your favorite local breakfast spot around the country? Let us know.
Meanwhile, among the out-of-the ordinary offerings from USA Today that won’t break the budget:
- A D.C. restaurant with two pork chops, two eggs, biscuits and grits for $8.50.
- A Dallas spot with scrambled eggs and feta on top of marinated nopales, complete with black beans and corn tortillas.
- A Chicago restaurant where $8.95 gets you these interesting flavors: cinnamon roll or jelly doughnut pancakes.
When your job responsibilities keep you to a tight schedule, take advantage of the CheckINN Direct hotels that have on-site breakfast service – many offer it at no charge.
Members simply log in to their online member account, go to Hotel Search and use the Find A Hotel tool for the area where they are traveling. At the top of the resulting list of hotels, select Breakfast and click Apply to see which hotels offer breakfast service.

Any workforce traveler who’s wondered why the car ahead of them can’t stay in its lane or why the truck making the turn is veering too close for comfort – and then seen the driver’s cell phone in hand – is going to like this latest technology news.
Automotive Fleet reports that the days of texting while driving may be undergoing a major shift soon, thanks to new, innovative software.
A company called WebSafety.Inc. offers CellSafety to keep drivers safe – with eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel.
The new software takes advantage of proprietary software that can detect – electronically – when is vehicle is moving more than 10 mph.
At that speed and higher, the software blocks the driver’s ability to send or read text and e-mail messages. It also blocks use of a phone’s Web browser.
Who can use it? Word is that it works on the U.S. four major wireless carriers and is applicable for the Android, Blackberry and Symbian wireless operating systems.
Sure, texting or e-mail while driving might seem like the height of convenience, but there’s little question that it’s a distraction that can have big consequences in terms of safety and keeping a driver’s focus on the road.
Keep your texting and e-mailing to those times when you’re pulled over or at a stop – or in for the night at any of the 10,000 hotels where you simply show your CheckINN Card when you register at the front desk to get your deeply discounted rate.
Your CheckINN Direct Member Rate gets you 20% to 40% off hotel’s Lowest Published Rates on every business lodging stay.
Of course, we always welcome your calls at CheckINN Direct, too: 1.866.857-9747.
Press Option 1 if you want to sign up for CheckINN Direct, Option 2 if you have a question about your account, or Option 3 if you want to get your Member Rate from our 24-hour Traveler Support Center.

If you like saving money – and CheckINN Direct members do! – you’re going to love the latest from Google. As David Pogue of the New York Times reports on his blog, Google is opening the door to free phone calls from your computer.
The way Pogue explains it, Voice Calls from Gmail are even easy to use.
For those who thought Skype and VoIP and other devices linked to computers and telephones sounded too tricky to navigate, Google’s innovation appears to be changing all that.
Granted, the freebie phone calls only are for calls to U.S. or Canadian phone numbers, but who is going to quibble about that? If it works, it’s simple to use and it’s free, there’s plenty to like.
And evidently calls on the service to other countries aren’t going to be very expensive, either. So, more to like.
The name isn’t too catchy, but again, who’s quibbling? We’re talking free phone calls from a computer to a phone.
As Pogue postulates in his posting, Voice Calls from Gmail makes the future of telephony a whole new ballgame – and the Internet looks like it’s going to be the star.

Toyota is in the news again, and it’s for another automotive recall. This time it’s a voluntary safety recall of more than 1 million Corolla and Matrix vehicles from model years 2005 through 2008, according to a news report on the Automotive Fleet Web site.
If you’re using CheckINN Direct to get deeply discounted rates on your workforce lodging, it’s likely you pay just as much attention to getting a good deal on your transportation. So Toyota’s recalls may be hitting close to home.
This year Toyota has issued recall notices for various models of its Lexus, Sequoia, Sienna, Prius and Camry automobiles.
The latest recall is related to a potential crack along some solder points in the vehicle’s engine.
Many budget-minded workforce travelers have depended on Toyota for reliable vehicles with great fuel economy through the years, factors that mean a lot when you’re on the road for business travel.
Toyota, Honda, and Nissan long have been watchwords for reliable service and savings, with smaller vehicles from Ford, Chevy, Saturn and others making strong gains in the same areas in recent years.
If you own the affected vehicles, expect to be notified next month by Toyota. Owners will be told when parts will be available for the repairs.
Earlier this week the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced it was investigating more complaints of stalled engines affecting Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks. The agency began studying similar complaints for 2006 Corolla vehicles last December.

If workforce travel is a big part of your job, you know what a difference it makes if the hotel amenities are tailored for your travel preferences. Make your hotel stays even more convenient by bringing some custom amenities just for you.
Consider packing these items the next time you head for your CheckINN Direct workforce lodging:
- Power strip – If you travel with a laptop, digital audio device, cell phone and other electronic devices, bring your own power strip. Once you plug it in your hotel room, you have all the outlets you need right when and where you need them.
- Clip-on book light – Like to end your day with a good book or magazine? With a clip-on book light, it doesn’t matter how the room lighting suits your bedside or armchair reading. They’re easy to tuck in your bag and inexpensive.
- Coffee – If your favorite brand is what starts your day off right, bring it along. Brew it up in your hotel room and fill a thermos. That familiar aroma will a smile on your face first thing. (The decaf version is nice way to have the comforts of home at the end of the day, too.)
- Nightlight – Every room is different and who wants to stumble in the dark? Pack your own nightlight and make getting up in the dark easy.
- Anti-bacterial wipes – Cut down on germs on TV remotes, door handles, light switches and more.
It’s true. Little things make a big difference – like CheckINN Direct’s 10,000 participating hotel locations, 24-hour traveler support, and Member Rates that save you 20% to 40% off hotels’ Lowest Published Rates.
Plus, when members log in to their online accounts, they can check for specific amenties available at each hotel location. Member Rates and how much you save off each hotel’s Lowest Published also are displayed online for each hotel (familiar brands and leading independents like Best Western, Ramada, Hampton Inn, Super 8, Holiday Inn and more).
It adds up to convenience that makes arranging business lodging quick and easy for you and your company travelers.

As you head toward your workforce lodging, you likely have business – not drunk drivers – on your mind. But there may be more impaired drivers sharing the road with you than you think.
How many? At least 17 million people have taken the wheel after drinking, according to a new report released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
That translates to 8 percent of drivers. The research indicates one in five Americans has driven within two hours of drinking.
The report coincides with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s crackdown on drunk drivers. The annual effort began Aug. 25 and continues through Labor Day, Sept. 6.
Thousands of police agencies across the U.S. take part in the law enforcement crackdown. That’s a good thing, because the statistics are sobering:
- Someone is killed by a drunk driver every 45 minutes
- About 3 in every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point
- Nearly 12,000 people died in drunk-driving crashes in 2008
The DOT campaign means there will be greater scrutiny of potentially impaired drivers as we head toward the Labor Day weekend. That’s good news.
But our advice for workforce travelers heading toward CheckINN Direct’s discounted hotel rooms holds true week-in and week-out, any time of the year: Drive defensively. Watch out for the other guy. And, don’t drink and drive.
