The Future of the Railroad is…in the Sky?

Wednesday, March 16th, 2016

FAA Helps the Industry Improve witMarch 16, 2016 Blog Pictureh Drones

North America’s railroads are the result of incredible human effort and innovation. Crisscrossing our great plains and mountain ranges, freight trains move an estimated $433.2 million or more across 140,000 rail miles in the U.S. alone, according to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).  It’s no small wonder that the industry has been humming along impressively for centuries. With such historied roots, the railroad lives in the minds of many laymen as an artifact. They see trains as the innovation of the industrial revolution, having nothing in common with today’s top technology, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), or drones.

Given the facts about these two technologies, it’s easy to argue that they don’t have much in common. Freight trains move at a speed of 22.5 miles per hour, while the ScanEagle UAS moves closer to 92 mph, or 80 knots. The first freight train steamed across the tracks in 1827, while commercial drones took their first approved flight less than 2 years ago, in 2014.

Last year, the FAA entered into a partnership with industry leaders to begin using drones to monitor and assess railways, according to Insitu, a company specializing in drone operations. From bridges to tunnels, potential for infrastructure and safety improvements are sky high thanks to the relationship between these old and new technologies. This will allow for a whole new level of quality assurance and, ultimately, better control over daily operations.

While the CheckINN Card doesn’t cover drones at the moment, CLC Lodging can offer better control over your workforce travel spending. With custom reporting and single-check payment, we’re here to take care of your crew while you take care of business. Learn more today.

Managed Travel Alternative

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

Business travel management programs have come a long way over the years but, managed travel is still not meeting every requirement that business travelers want.

In a recent article on Business Travel News, the article states that the elements of managed travel include online tools, visibility of noncompliant bookings and internal budgeting assistance. Many companies are allowing their employees to search online for the hotel they would like to stay in, giving them a few guidelines to follow. Allowing the employees to book their own hotel room can create more work for your company. Business Travel News explains, “This concept will increase travel costs, increase productivity costs and lose valuable data, from both a risk-management and a supplier optimization standpoint.” Travel program administrators will spend more time handling expense reports and monitoring program guidelines if done this way.

The alternative? Implement a travel management program that will free up your administrator’s time. CLC Lodging provides a directory of hotels to your company that fall within your company’s preferred suppliers and negotiated rate. Your employees will check-in with their CLC CheckINN card at authorized hotels, and CLC Lodging takes over from there. Each bill is run through a 52 point audit to ensure the hotel stay was authorized and that the company will only be billed for room & tax. At that point, your company will be billed and provided with consolidated reporting.

While savings remain the major objective, the traveler experience is also top of mind as technology and data offer new opportunities for user-friendly services that support the travel program. CLC Lodging’s Hotel Locater App allows business travelers to access the CLC hotel directory from their smart phone so they can easily find a hotel when they are on the road.

CLC Lodging offers many benefits that conform to the purchasing behaviors of your company. Click here to request more information.

Control Your Business Travel Expenses

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Tips for Success

Auditing your company's workforce travel expenses improves the bottom line.

Have you audited your company expense reports or travel policy lately? Many of your fellow business owners are. Mary Ann McNulty of Business Travel News reports that company audits are up, perhaps in part to the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) spending debacle. While you can probably rest assured that your expenses aren’t as egregious as the GSA’s, it’s always a good idea to take the pulse of your travel program.

Are your workforce travelers turning in justifiable expenses, or sliding unwarranted expenditures through a loose interpretation of your company’s travel policy? If your answer is: “I don’t know” or “I’m not really sure,” it may be a good time to take a closer look at employee expense reports. You can only manage what you measure.

Do certain trends appear upon analysis of expense reports? Do you notice that employees are staying a little too close to home? Do some expenses look more pleasure, than business related? With data in hand, the next step is to make changes to your travel policy and put additional controls in place.

A good travel policy is an evolving document that is reviewed annually. It should explicitly identify what is acceptable such as per diem policy, hotel rate range and personal use.  Control hotel prices by limiting hotel types, prices and locations. Describe what receipts are needed for per diem allowances. Spell out the consequences for abuse and enforce them. Controls increase efficiency while limiting unpleasant surprises at the end of the year.

Unsure where to start? With savings of 20-40% on hotels nationwide and in Canada, CLC Lodging provides the service and metrics to improve your travel policy and bottom line. Go to www.clclodging.com for more information today.

CheckINN Direct Saves Your Company Time, Money on Hotels

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Got employees who travel to do their work in boots, not suits? Construction crews, tower erectors, drivers, field reps, installers, inventory teams and others who stay in economy and mid-scale hotels?

If so, expect rough road ahead if your company still is trying to negotiate discounted hotel rates on its own this year.

As the hotel industry rebounds, here’s what you’re up against this year if you aren’t booking with CheckINN Direct:
  • Higher occupancy — Forget recent years when your travelers could bargain for a cheap rate at the front desk. Now the lodging industry recovery is well under way. According to Smith Travel Research, hotel occupancies rose to 67 percent last year from 2010 occupancy of 64 percent.
  • Steadily climbing rates — 2012 is on track to continue last year’s rising occupancy trend, and higher rates go along with it. Last week the U.S. hotel industry saw average occupancy gains of 5.5% to 51.7%, reports Hotel News Now. Last week’s average daily room rate across the country went up 3.1%.
  • Possibly exceeding your travel budgetTravel  planners surveyed by Carlson Wagonlit Travel admit to worries over ever-increasing costs, especially since many travel planners found they’d exceeded their travel budgets before 2011 was over. Business demand was mandating travel, but costs were higher than many companies planned for. This year they want to optimize their hotel spend to stretch their lodging dollars, more than 50% of respondents told Carlson pollsters.

If your company is ready for an easy way to save time and money on workforce travel, there’s no need to wait.

Year-End Hotel Rates Were Up 4.3% Over Last Year

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Rising hotel prices make lodging savings card program like CheckINN Direct even more valuable to workforce travelersDid you notice hotel rates going up for your workforce travel last year? Here are the facts, according to what the L.A. Times recently reported:

“At the end of December, hotel rates nationwide were up 4.3% from a year earlier, to an average daily rate of $107.56, according to a study released Friday by STR Global, a hotel research firm in Nashville.”

Bottom line: There’s never been a better time to start getting your workforce lodging costs under control.

Try putting the CLC Lodging Savings Card in your company travelers’ hands. With no contracts or minimum usage requirements, there’s nothing to lose – but lots of $$$ to save since the Card brings hotel savings of 20-40%.

Starting in 2008, the economic recession hit the hotel industry hard as many companies cut back on business travel. Then hotel rates started to go back up in Q2 2010 when more travelers hit the road, especially business travelers.

Now nearly two years since that resurgence got under way, higher demand will continue to push rates higher. TravelClick, a hotel industry data provider, forecasts rates going up 3-5% in cities like Houston, Detroit, Indianapolis, Miami and Charlotte, the Times story said.

Business Travelers: Why Pay More for a Hotel Room?

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Save on business travel with CLC LodgingMore and more business travelers are discovering what CheckINN Direct members already know: economy hotels fit their requirements when they’re on the road.

According to an American Express Business Insights study reported this month in USA Today, midscale and even upscale hotels have lost favor among all types of travelers.

More and more workforce travelers are looking for a bargain, and are finding it at economy hotels that focus on quality.

As one company traveler in the new story put it, all she needs is “a good comfortable bed and shower, the ability to work and get food and drink when needed.”

That’s the kind of lodging that the CLC Lodging Savings Card provides to any company with workforce travelers. Members can use the Card at more than 10,000 locations coast to coast. Participating locations range from Best Western and Super 8 to Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, Ramada and Motel 6.

Like most workforce travelers hitting their hotel room just to get a good night’s sleep, you likely don’t want to pay more than they have to. Members who carry the CLC Lodging Savings Card always pay prices that are 20-40% lower than hotels’ lowest published rates.
