Cutting Calories – and Hotel Costs – On the Road

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Truck drivers can get hotel discounts with CLC Lodging's Hotel Savings CardCLC Lodging’s Hotel Savings Card helps workforce travelers cut lodging costs on the road (you know, it’s the card that saves you 20-40% off the same hotels where you likely already stay). Like you, we believe deep hotel discounts for business travel are always a good thing.

With a big Thanksgiving meal behind us, we’re interested in the news reports of another good thing – how truck drivers can get in better shape when they’re stuck behind the wheel day after day. The New York Times recently reported several new efforts under way to help truckers stay healthy.

Just one example: In January, the Truckload Carriers Association is kicking off a weight loss showdown for 10 truck fleets and office workers. Working with the Lindora Clinic, they’ll follow low-fat/low-carb diets and exercise for 10 weeks.

It’s all part of efforts to address obesity in the trucking industry, where companies are facing rapidly rising costs for health insurance and drivers are required to pass government-mandated health tests (since healthy drivers can mean fewer highway accidents, for one thing).

The challenge is difficult in a business where drivers are fighting against time to reach their destinations. Still, The Times story provides some noteworthy success stories, like one driver who’s doing sit-ups in his trailer, using an ice-filled cooler as a makeshift weight that he lifts over his head, and power-walking around truck stops.

It’s a start – he’s lost nearly 20 pounds since summer.

Fellow workforce travelers, no matter what takes you on the road for business, you always can check whether your favorite hotel in the CLC Lodging network has a health club/workout room. You’ll find it as part of the amenity list when you log in to your account and conduct a hotel search.

Happy Thanksgiving to All Workforce Travelers!

Monday, November 21st, 2011

If you’re fortunate enough to be sharing the annual turkey day holiday with family and friends at home, enjoy yourselves. But at CheckINN Direct, we know some workforce travelers will find themselves still on the road for business when Thanksgiving rolls around this Thursday.

Maybe your crew is fighting the weather to finish up at a job site or your team is staffing a holiday event that gets under way bright and early Friday morning. Let’s hope not – but it’s possible weather may strand you, too. Check out the holiday travel forecast here.

If you’re among those road warriors hanging out in a hotel this Thanksgiving, here are a few ways you put yourself in a holiday mood anyway:

Give yourself a break. Travel burnout can happen at any time of year, but even more so if your job has you traveling at the holidays. Slow down on Thanksgiving, whether it’s sleeping in, vegging out with football or spending all afternoon with a book or at the movies. And don’t forget – this is the perfect day for a nap, too!

Smile about your saCheckINN Direct saves workforce travelers 20-40% on hotel pricesvings. Have some time on your hands? Figure out what you’d save with CheckINN Direct’s 20-40% off hotels’ Lowest Published Rates. If you’re already a member, log in to your online CheckINN Direct account — it shows you exactly what you’ve saved.

Mirror your holiday at home, or shake it up. There will be plenty of places where you can find a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Check the online site of the local newspaper to see who’s serving, or inquire at the front desk. If you’re in the mood for lasagna instead, there won’t be any relatives around to protest.

Get moving. Streets will be pretty empty of traffic so here’s a chance to get out and really take a good look at the town. If you’re lucky enough to be in a metro area where a Thanksgiving morning parade remains a tradition, check it out! Or go online now to see if there’s a local “turkey trot,” a fun run or walk that is held on Thanksgiving in many communities.

CLC Lodging gives small businesses access to the same hotel discounts large companies enjoyCLC Lodging hopes all workforce travelers are comfortable and ready to relax and enjoy on Thursday. No matter where you’re celebrating, here’s wishing you plenty of pumpkin pie!

Don’t Forget Hotel Room Discounts of 20-40%

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

Don't forget that CLC Lodging's Hotel Savings Program for small and independent businesses saves you 20-40% off hotel roomsAs a frequent workforce traveler, what have you left behind in your hotel room? Maybe leather gloves or expensive eyeglasses? Or even something more irreplaceable like laptops or keys?

A recent story in USA Today cites a variety of items left behind in airplanes or in hotel rooms. Some are understandable – jewelry and electronics, false teeth and toupees. But wouldn’t you love to hear the specifics of travelers who left behind a saddle, a litter of kittens, or a cooked Thanksgiving turkey?!

Not surprisingly, cell phone chargers are frequently forgotten. So much so that one hotel manager recommends calling down to the front desk if you need one – they just may let you borrow from their lost and found if you require an emergency charge overnight.

CLC Lodging wants you to always remember the deeply discounted hotel room rates you get at more than 10,000 hotels when you use its Hotel Savings Card program. After all, that’s 20-40% off the lowest rates published on the Internet. But don’t forget your important travel items when you’re on the road, either.

Seasoned business travelers recommend doing a last-minute check before exiting your hotel room at check-out. Open drawers in the bureau, desk and night table and take one last look at the bathroom counter. Thoroughly inspect the closet hangars, floor and shelf.

If you do find you’ve forgotten an item you need, contact the hotel promptly. They’ll often arrange to send it to you or hold it until your next stay if you’re returning soon (more good reasons to stay on pleasant terms with the hotel staff on your business travels.)

Some good comes from unclaimed items, though. They usually wind up as donations to local charities like Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

11-11-11: CLC Lodging Thanks All Veterans

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

CLC Lodging and CheckINN Direct salute all veterans on Veterans DayWe’re putting aside the business of doing business in this space in favor of a few short lines in honor of Veterans Day, which happens to fall on 11-11-11 this year.

CLC Lodging and CheckINN Direct humbly salute all the workforce travelers who have served as veterans, and the businesses across the country that employ them.

The annual observance of Veterans Day allows every American citizen the opportunity to express appreciation to all veterans – both those living and those no longer among us – and to reflect on their sacrifice and dedication on behalf of the USA.

Our soldiers, sailors and pilots never fail to answer the call to protect this country, and we count on them to defend the ideals of human liberty wherever it’s threatened around the world.

There’s a reason Veterans Day is observed every year on Nov. 11, no matter what day of the week that date falls.

It was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 that fighting came to an end between the Allied nations and Germany. That armistice effectively ended World War I even though the official Treaty of Versailles wasn’t signed until more than 7 months later.

Although World War once was believed to be the war to end all wars, sadly it was not. In the nearly 100 years since the end of that conflict, our military forces have been called upon time and time again to serve and sacrifice.

Thanking them today is the least we can do.

Workforce Travelers, Get a Flu Shot Now & Rest Easy All Winter Long

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Save the bed for a relaxing sleep after a hard day at work, not for flu recuperationWorkforce travelers, have you gotten a flu shot yet? Your frequent business travel away from home could put you at even higher risk for contracting the cold-weather virus.

CLC Lodging wants you to know that flu shots aren’t just for the young or old anymore, either. Everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. That’s been the recommendation of an advisory committee for the U.S. Center for Disease Control since February 2010.

Getting the flu is nothing to sneeze at. It can send you to bed in a hurry – and you certainly don’t want to jeopardize your work assignment while you’re on the road. There also can be serious complications, so don’t put yourself, your family or your co-workers at risk.

The shot itself couldn’t be easier – it’s over in a hurry and really doesn’t hurt. (Here’s a tip: Just shake your arm a little to relax and loosen up your muscles before the shot is administered.) Many people choose to get the shot in the same arm they use to write since the movement during the rest of the day helps avoid soreness, too.

With grocery stores, pharmacies and discount stores on nearly every corner making them available, there’s no excuse not to get the shot. Flu.gov offers a handy nationwide locator to help you find a location that’s convenient for your schedule. Throughout flu season, practice good hygiene to help prevent the spread of germs. Frequently washing your hands, using hand sanitizer and traveling with anti-bacterial wipes are good practices to follow all year long.
